Quick guide for nails
- 2″ nail — 6 per picket (stockade or shadow box, 6′ tall); 6 per top row of pickets on board on board.
- 3″ nail — 4 per rail, whatever the style.
Wood is a natural material and no two trees are alike. Milling squares the edges, so sizes vary a little — that's why wood sizes are "nominal", usually ¼″ to ½″ bigger than the actual board.
